Shepherd & Snow - Our Story
Born from the Highlands. Crafted by Generations.
Nestled in the breathtaking mountains of Barkly East in South Africa's Eastern Cape lies Bergplaas Merino Stud—a fourth-generation family farm where generations have lived, worked, and cared for the land with dedication, respect, and an unwavering passion for Merino sheep.
Since 1936, our family has devoted itself to breeding exceptional Merino sheep, preserving one of South Africa's most treasured farming traditions. Every sunrise over the mountains, every lamb born in spring, every shearing season, and every passing winter has shaped not only our flock but our family's way of life.
Merino farming is far more than our livelihood—it is our heritage.
The story of Shepherd & Snow began not in a laboratory, but on our family farm.
For generations, we witnessed the remarkable qualities of the natural lanolin produced by our Merino sheep. Shepherds and farmers have long appreciated how it helped protect and soften hardworking hands exposed to icy winters, mountain winds, and the demanding conditions of life in the highlands.
Inspired by nature and guided by traditional wisdom, we began exploring the remarkable skin-loving benefits of pure sheep tallow. Combined with the richness of pure natural lanolin and other carefully selected nourishing oils, botanical extracts, vitamins, and premium ingredients, we developed skincare that honours both our farming heritage and the remarkable gifts found in nature.
What began as handcrafted products made for our own family, friends, and neighbours soon became a passion to share with others.
Today, every Shepherd & Snow product is lovingly handmade in small batches using carefully rendered sheep tallow, pure natural lanolin, premium oils, botanical ingredients, and thoughtfully selected natural components chosen for their nourishing, protective, and restorative qualities. Every ingredient is selected with purpose, ensuring each product delivers the quality and care we would expect for our own family.
